What we do - Domestic Abuse Services

ADAPT ProgrammesADAPT Logo - Information For Men

Have you been violent or abusive in your relationships with women? You can make a choice to stop your behaviour and the ADAPT(Adapt Domestic Abuse Prevention Training) programme can help you.  We receive referrals from agencies such as Probation, Children’s Services and Relate.  You can also self refer to the programme.

A fee is charged for self-referrers based on an income related sliding scale.

The Hampton Trust welcomes men of all ethnic groups, ages, class, religions and ability/disability.

At ADAPT you will be encouraged to think about your actions, the impact of this and explore strategies and techniques to avoid using abusive behaviour.  ADAPT is not an anger management programme.  ADAPT is based on the Duluth model and uses the issue of ‘power and control’ as a theoretical framework.  Men are encouraged to address their attitudes and values.  You will be challenged to critically assess your own behaviour and work towards building respectful relationships.  It is a 30 week rolling group work programme consisting of the following 5 modules that each last for 6 weeks:-

  • Physical Abuse
  • Sexual Respect
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Domestic Abuse & Children
  • Rebuilding Trust & Respect

ADAPT runs weekly for 2 hours and is delivered by a male and female Group Leader.  Prior to coming onto the programme you will be required to attend an assessment interview with a member of the ADAPT team.

The interview will assess:-

  • Acknowledgement of responsibility
  • Levels of denial and minimisation
  • Motivation to want to change behaviour
  • Current or previous mental health problems do not prevent benefiting from the group
  • Social and mental ability to function as part of a group
  • Behaviour is not so dangerous that safety would be compromise
  •  Substance misuse problems are controlled sufficiently so that regular group attendance is possible
Women’s Support Service

Men must be willing to provide details of their current or ex partner prior to being accepted on to the ADAPT programme.

The Women’s Support Service will provide support for the duration of the programme and following completion. The Women’s Support Worker will make contact with you following
your (ex) partner being accepted on to the ADAPT programme.

One to one support is aimed at:-

  • Increasing physical safety, emotional and psychological well-being
  •  Providing information about the ADAPT programme
  • Providing opportunities to develop insight and understanding about domestic abuse
  • Helping to manage changes that may occur as a result of ADAPT
  • Promoting realistic expectations regarding attendance on ADAPT
  • Offering information, advice and guidance sensitively so that a woman
feels empowered to make informed choice
  • Providing information on specialist services within the local area

Where there is enough interest the Women’s Support Worker will also run regular support

group. ADAPT aims at keeping you as safe and supported as possible.
