FGC's are available in Southampton only at this current time. We are commissioned to provide services for Southampton Children's Services and for Southampton Community Safety where the conferences are provided free of charge. What Is A Family Group Conference?

  1. It is a meeting for family & friends to make plans & decisions about a child/children.
  2. It is convened & run by an independent co-coordinator.
  3. Extended family & friendship networks are included so that their support & strengths can be used to help make the best possible plan for a child/children

Why Use A FGC?

  • When everyone who cares is involved & consulted it is thought that the best results are achieved.
  • Professionals and families need to work in partnership to keep children safe.
  • With the relevant information & support families can do this and make lasting changes.

What Happens At The FGC?
The meeting is in 3 stages:

1. Information Sharing

The coordinator welcomes & introduces everyone & explains what will happen. The referrer will be asked to explain their concerns, any legal or safety limitation, & any resources or services that may be available. Other professionals will share their thoughts about the issues & say what services they could offer. The family & friends will have the opportunity to ask questions.

2.   Private Family Time

All professionals leave & the family & friends are left to discuss & plan in private.

The coordinator & referrer stay close by in case the family has any questions.

3. Agreeing the Plan

When the family is ready, the coordinator & referrer return. Together you go through the plan to be clear who will do what. The referrer is asked to agree & support the plan. Agreements are made about how to monitor the plan and when it will be reviewed.

After The FGC

The co-coordinator will write up the family’s plan and ensure that everyone who was invited receives a copy.

The referrer and other professionals need to support resource and implement any aspects of the plan that involve themselves or their agency as soon as possible.

The Review Meeting

Most plans need looking at again to see how they are going. Usually within 2 or 3 months everyone comes together again to discuss progress
