The Hampton Trust supports the Home Office definition of domestic abuse which states:
“Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.” This includes issues of concern to black and minority ethnic (BME) communities such as so called ‘honour killings’.
“Domestic abuse frequently co-exists with child abuse” (as added by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Domestic Abuse Forum)
In Women's Aid's view domestic violence is physical, sexual, psychological or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship and that forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. This can include forced marriage and so-called 'honour crimes'. Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviours, not all of which are in themselves inherently 'violent'. HT defines domestic abuse as a means of gaining power and control over a current or ex partner. As well as covering physical and sexual violence it can include non-physical abuse such as verbal, racist, psychological and emotional abuse. Forms of control include controlling money, access to material goods, who a woman sees or phones and how long she spends with other people. Whether actual or threatened all of this constitutes domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse occurs across all ages, races and classes regardless of education, income or mental ability. It happens between people in same sex relationships and can also be carried out by women against men. It is important to acknowledge that all forms of domestic abuse can have damaging and lasting effects on the victims and other members of the family. The impact of domestic abuse on children and young people can not be underestimated in terms of their immediate safety, emotional and physical wellbeing and long term development.
